Robert F. Durden Prize and Chester P. Middlesworth Award

Researching in the Gothic Reading Room The Robert F. Durden Prize recognizes undergraduates’ excellence in research, including their analysis, evaluation and synthesis of sources, and encourages students to make use of the general library collections and services at Duke University. Funding for the awards has been provided by Stuart (W.C.,1964) and Bill Buice (L, 1964) and named in honor of Robert “Bob” F. Durden, professor emeritus of history.

The Middlesworth Awards have been established to encourage and recognize excellence of research, analysis, and writing by Duke University students in the use of primary sources and rare materials held by the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library of Duke University. Funding for the awards has been provided by Chester P. Middlesworth (A.B., 1949) of Statesville, North Carolina.

General Guidelines

  • All submissions (see individual guidelines for the Durden Prize and the Middlesworth Award), must be received by May 15, 2011
  • Papers or projects completed in Summer 2010, Fall 2010 or Spring 2011 are eligible for the 2011 Durden Prize or 2011 Middlesworth Award
  • All awards carry a cash prize of $1000
  • Award recipients will be notified by August 30, 2011
  • Awards reception will be held during Parents' and Family Weekend 2011
